WINTER PARK, COLORADO--If you're one of those skiers who never quite
gets in enough turns during the ski season, or maybe just a dreamer with
fantasies of gliding gracefully down the side of a mountain, then the
Winter Park Alpine Slide is for you.
Now in its tenth summer of operation, over one million riders have
enjoyed the thrill of Colorado's longest Alpine Slide as it meanders more
than one-half mile down the mountainside beneath the Arrow and Hughes
chairlifts. And, with its panoramic mountain view of the Fraser Valley,
the beautifully landscaped Alpine Slide is as aesthetically pleasing as it
is exciting.
Riding the slide requires no special skills. The rider sits on a
polyethylene sled (equipped with wheels and brakes), and an adult and small
child (under 45 inches in height) may share a sled. The rider controls the
speed of descent with a "joy stick." You accelerate by moving the stick
forward, which lifts the sled up from its runners onto wheels, or slow down
or stop by pulling backwards on the stick.
Last summer an automated "sled mover" was installed at the top of the
Alpine Slide to carry sleds from the chairlift to the start area. This
summer riders will be glad to find a similar system has been built in the
finish area to transports sleds back to the chairlift, making riding the
slide even more enjoyable.
The Alpine Slide will open for the June weekend and begins daily
operation June , from : a.m. to : p.m. Twilight Hour is from June
through August when the slide will be open until : p.m.

PUEBLO:
PUEBLO MAKES SUMMER SPLASH
Pueblo State Recreation Area is gearing up for the summer season by
adding three flume slides to the swim lake, two new campgrounds around the
reservoir and facilities to the sail-boarding beach.
The three flume slides which are located at Rock Canyon swim beach,
will open on Memorial Day. The slides are each 42 feet high and curl 350
feet before depositing the rider into a nine acre man-made pond below the
dam. Lifeguards are on hand to keep vigilant eyes on swimmers.
Sandy beaches and five acres of grass surround the pond, enhancing the
enjoyment of summer swimmers and splashers. Concession stands offering
food and drink, showers, lockers, picnic tables, grills and a playground
are all available to ensure a carefree day at the beach.
A parks pass is needed for entry into the park and entry into the
beach is 50 cents. Rides on the slide are 50 cents each, or 10 rides for
$4.50, or $7.50 for day-long use of the slides.
In addition to the slides, 180 campsites will be opening some time
this summer at both the north and south ends of the reservoir, bringing
the total of campsites in the park to 400.
The 100 new sites at Arkansas Point Campground are located at the
south side of the reservoir, above the south shore marina and across from
the park headquarters.
This full-service campground will have electrical hookups, a dump
station, paved trailer pads and paved roads, flush showers, rest rooms and
laundry facilities, as well as tables, grills and water hydrants.
The other new campground, Juniper Breaks, will accommodate 80 sites
and is designed for primitive camping. It is located on the north side of
the reservoir, east of north shore marina. There are no electrical
hookups or showers but the sites are paved, as are the roads, and vault
rest rooms, tables and grills are available.
Along with swimmers and campers, Pueblo State Recreation Area is
striving to increase recreational pleasure for sail boarders also. The
dirt road into the sailboarding area has been paved and 110 parking spaces
have been added. Drinking water and rest rooms will be available on the
site. The project will be completed in August.
In addition, rangers have placed buoys 150 yards from shore to
enable surfers to get started without distraction from boats. Once
underway, wind surfers can sail anywhere on the reservoir.
New slides, new campground and improved sailboarding
accessibility--with these new additions to the park, summertime just keeps
getting better and better at Pueblo State Recreation Area.
