How To Get Here:
When visiting the Albuquerque, New Mexico area, the best adventure is at the Sandia Peak Tramway. This tramway is the world's longest passenger tramway with a total horizontal length of 2.7 miles. The tramway ride rises 3,819 feet through the mountain peaks and above the Cibola National Forrest. The ride takes just under 15 minutes traveling at 12 mph to reach the forested crest. The Sandia Peak Tramway is located on the west side of Sandia Mountain. It is easy to reach by car. From either I-25 or I-40, take Tramway Road or Tramway Blvd. which lead to the tramway.
The tramway was manufactured by Bell Engineering, Lucerne, Switzerland in 1964-66 at a cost of $2,000,000. It is a Double Reversible Jigback Aerial Tramway. Five thousand helicopter trips were made during construction of Tower 2 and cable installation alone. You can view the system of counterweights, flywheels and haul ropes. New tramcars were installed in 1986 for its 20th anniversary.
The top of the tramway leads to overlooks of Albuquerque, the other mountains and volcanoes in New Mexico, and to hiking paths, 24 miles of mountain biking paths and a full service restaurant (High Finance Restaurant.) This is truly dinner with a view!! Reservations are suggested for dinner which results in lower tramway ride fares. Summer group picnics can be arranged with a wide selection of menus.
Also at the Sandia Peak is the ski area in winter and the mountain bike adventure in the summer. Chairlifts operate year round and take you to the top of Sandia Peak from the east of Sandia Peak along with your bikes. Marked trails let you ride the terrain of your choice on the way down. In the winter, the hiking paths are cross-country ski trails. Not over 10,378 feet in elevation, snow is prevalent from November through April.
Summer is full of Mountain Bike events and challenges. Bike rental packages are available for the entire family. Group rates are available for 20 or more people.
